Chapter Eighteen

Rest at 35,000 Feet

The hum of the airplane’s engines made Chuan feel safe. That, and being in an enclosed space 35,000 feet above the ground and hundreds of miles away from anyone who might be pursuing them. So, for now the adrenaline left his body, and Chuan was able to relax his muscles and sink into the seat. His body felt like he had been through a triathlon, and he just wanted to sleep and sleep.

It was past midnight Pacific Time, and the cabin lights had been dimmed. Everyone around him was either sleeping or watching movies on the screens inset into the backs of the chairs in front of them.

But Chuan couldn’t sleep. His mind was still racing. He knew they were heading into another intense situation. They needed to find where Mallory’s kidnappers had hidden her as quickly as possible and get her out of there. He hoped and prayed that she was safe, and that they would easily locate her. If Rod’s guess was correct, they would need to find a way out to Jeff’s island, track down where on the island Jeff might be keeping her, and sneak into wherever they were keeping her. A lot of unknowns.

Chuan reached up and hit the button to request the flight attendant.

The flight attendant quickly appeared next to Chuan’s seat. “Yes, sir. How may I help you?”

“Could I get a Diet Coke?”

“Yes, of course. I’ll bring one now.”

Before she left, Chuan looked up at her and asked, “And a pen?”

“I’ll see if we have one, sir.”

She turned around and went to the galley in the back of the plane. She soon returned with his drink and a United Airlines silver and blue pen. Chuan started sipping the Diet Coke and then unfolded the napkin on the tray table.

He wrote down an outline of what they needed to do once they landed in Manila and Cebu. In the corner of his eye, Chuan saw a large dark figure rise from a seat a few rows ahead of him and make his way to Chuan’s row. Rod.

“So, how’s it going?” Rod asked as he slipped into the empty seat next to his.

“I need some sleep, but my brain is racing over everything.”

“Yeah, hear ya.”

Chuan reached up and turned on the reading light. The man laying down in the next row grunted in disapproval, but Chuan ignored him.

“Here’s an outline of what I think we need to do when we get to Manila and Cebu.”

Rod looked down on the napkin. “SIM cards. We need to get five.”

“Why five?”

“One to call Joel that we then ditch. One for each of us to stay connected and spares in case those are compromised.”

“Is there any way that they can trace us with those SIM cards?”

“Less likely. If we use cash, it’s like a burner phone.”

“Gotcha. I’m too tired to think, so I’ll trust you.”

“I’m too tired to think, too. But we need to plan before landing.”

“Let’s rest now. We’ve got fifteen hours. This can wait.
